How we set materiality before the first fieldwork week

Materiality is not a secret percentage whispered only among auditors. For a clean year-end, finance leads should understand how the planning figure is chosen and what that means for sample sizes.

We usually begin with draft revenue and equity from the latest close, then adjust for one-off items that would distort a percentage of profit. A manufacturer with thin margins and heavy inventory gets different attention than a service company with large deferred revenue.

What we ask of you: a clear view of unusual gains, related-party balances, and any covenant thresholds that sit close to reported numbers. Those facts change how we set performance materiality for receivables and inventory, not only the headline figure.

If your trial balance is still moving in the week before fieldwork, say so early. We would rather revise planning materiality once than rebuild samples mid-engagement.
